>> reporter: heavy rain this morning in many parts of the bay area and that will make for a wet commute. we'll tell you the warning the chp has for drivers coming up. those of you who remember, there was a band called the guess who and they had a song called the rain dance. for those of you dance, it's arrived. there's been reports of hail. an overnight hit-and-run crash injures seven people in san francisco. now the people in the san suspects's car were chased down as they tried to get away. >> reporter: the stars will be out at the oracle arena to celebrate the accomplishments of 16,000 kids in the state. what the kids did to get here to "we day." you are looking live at the rain coming down in san francisco. a storm's been moving through the bay area for the past several hours. it's right at the heart of the morning commute. we've had reports of hail in san francisco. so full forecast -- coming up. it's wednesday, march 26th. i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. we have live team coverage for you on stormwatch. alex savidge has been out driving around in the rain this morning. sal, of course, is watching the entire bay area commute. but first, we go to steve for what we can expect for the rest of the morning. >> a lot of rain in san francisco, oakland, areas to the east. it's been raining from points north to the santa cruz mountains and even santa cruz. this is a pretty good system. we talked about how yesterday wouldn't do much. but today looked to be active. it did. it's out of the gate as the front-runner. there are a lot of reports. thanks to everyone for the

reports, especially twitter. heavy rain, noe valley, maybe where you are, rockridge, alameda, rain is picking up as well. rain today, sometimes it will be occasionally heavy in spots and then it disappears. mill valley had heavy rain. gusts 20, 40 miles an hour. we already had hail but the possibility exists for more later. rain is picking up to the south. this one is favoring marin county, napa south. it was really heavy in the potrero district when i zoomed in on this. you can see some of the lighter rain stretching back to the mission. although there was some heavy rain. also around hercules, crockett, vallejo, to sear's point. san pablo bay. watch how the rain picks up towards mill valley. now it looks like things have calmed down a little bit. there were pockets where it went by. tiburon. east bay, out to clayton, mt.

diablo, brentwood, oakley. concord, pleasant hill, walnut creek. la fayette. san ramon. just starting to rain in livermore. i do know that. it's been kind of quiet south. it's showing itself. milpitas, san jose, mountain view as well. look what this is just approaching, santa cruz, aptos heading into the santa cruz mountains. this looks like a pretty big deal. it's close to the radar site. 40s and 50s. cloudy with rain. occasionally heavy, breezy cooler. heaviest rain later to the north. afternoon temperatures not going far. 50s and low 60s. here's sal. just because of the wet weather it's rougher on the roads. we have problems almost everywhere. we're gonna start with highway 24 westbound. it's very heavy. the drive time between walnut creek and oakland is 15 minutes or so. maybe 20 and a lot of it is slow traffic. not a lot of -- well, there aren't any crashes on the way reported by chp. however, there has been some crash activity in concord and

walnut creek in pleasant hill this morning early. we're also looking at the bay bridge toll plaza, 30 to 45- minute drive time and it will be raining throughout the day. so the traffic is going to be busy. not only this morning but as steve mentioned, it will probably be a day-long event. 680 southbound. very slow traffic from highway 4 all the way down here. we also have slow traffic on the eastshore freeway, as you come down toward the area. one of the things i want to mention, the nimitz freeway is very slow early on. it's backed up all the way down to decoto. the wet weather has made the commute start earlier and it's heavier. let's go to alex savidge who is in san francisco and, alex, it looks like it's raining pretty hard there. >> reporter: yeah, you know, i should tell you, it's sort of let up a little bit. but we just got blasted really by a huge downpour that moved through the area. we're in downtown san francisco this morning. i'll give you a look at what we have behind us. in fact, just as i start

speaking the rain lets you u it was raining hard just a few minutes ago. a strong storm cell moving through san francisco reports of hail in this area, also the possibility of lightning, according to the national weather service. let me show you some video from a short time ago. we took this video along the embarcadero where we saw people biking and running in the area. the rain started to pick up about an hour ago. the roads out there, they are slick. you want to be careful as we came across the bay bridge from the east bay, this morning, traffic was already slow. that was at about 6:00 this morning just because of the wet roads. the chp says when it does rain, they usually see twice as many crashes as they normally do. everyone needs to slow down. they need to make sure they don't follow the car in front of them too closely. that's how you can avoid getting into any sort of a crash this morning. again, heavy rain here in san francisco. this morning it's moving from west to east this strong cell. so folks in the east bay

mendocino county sheriff's deputy killed in the line of duty will be laid to rest later this morning. 48-year-old deputy ricky del fiorintiono was killed last week by a suspect who was later killed. he was a star wrestler and football player at napa high school. the memorial service for him begins at 10:00 in fort bragg. governor jerry brown will be among the thousands of people attending the service. it is 7:08. a san francisco restaurant destroyed by a huge fire nearly a year and a half ago is reopening this morning. squat and gobble on west portal avenue went up in flames in october 2012 after a fire started in the building next door. the fire caused $7 million in damage to three buildings. squat and gobble was rebuilt from the ground up and now includes a second floor with a private dining and meeting space.

san francisco mayor ed lee will cut the ribbon at this year's reopening. well, oakland's oracle arena is set up and ready for "we day california." a wonderful event. ktvu is a proud sponsor, all designed to celebrate people who worked hard and positivitily to help others. about 16,000 people will fill up the students. each got a free ticket after pledging to make a difference. speakers include selena gomez, orlando, bloom. brian flores is already there at the oracle arena. joining us live. students and volunteer. they are starting to just arrive. brian? >> reporter: they sure are. some of them making their way quickly inside oracle arena. 16,000 kids from throughout the state are gonna be here today to celebrate really their accomplishments in youth acty victim and volunteerism.

we're talking about "we day." yesterday, organizers made their final preps before the big event. "we day" is an event 0 to celebrate what kids have done to make a difference in their worlds. schools have picked up trash at nearby parks, some battling marine pollution, some raising money for clean water in kenya, same raising their heads to raise money for cancer research. you couldn't buy the tickets. they had to pledge and act on how they would change their communities. >> these young people to come to "we day" 9.6 million they logged for charities. it's amazing the impact by kids. >> reporter: just a wonderful event. kids from all over the state, even as far south as san diego will be here to see the likes and hear from celebrities and singers, magic johnson, martin sheen, selena gomez, big shawn

and orlando bloom, which many of our producerses back at the studio want to pass along their phone numbers but i die digress -- digress. it will be a good day here to celebrate what the kids have done to get here. brian flores, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. we will be streaming all of the "we day" events at ktvu.com. you can watch it starting at 9:30 this morning. 7:11. in just a few hours, a major oil company is scheduled to make a big announcement about jobs in the east bay. chevron has a large refinery in richmond and executives will hold a joint news conference with the contra costa county building trades council. they are expected to announce a deal that would bring hundreds of new jobs to richmond. the details won't be announced until after this morning's news conference. 7:11. california lawmakers are now backing off from a new law that

requires people who work with food to wear gloves. a state assembly committee voted to repeal and revisit the regulation before enforcement begins this summer. now, a group of chefs and bartenders say the law is too restrictive. it undermindings existing practices. governor brown signed the legislation into law last year. it requires restaurant workers to wear gloves or use utensils when they handle ready to eat food to a -- to avoid any possible illnesses. a big crash at a busy san francisco intersection. a look at what happened that caused so many injuries and the impact on traffic right now. also, the hope to find survivors of that massive landslide in washington state, it's dimming this morning. coming up in three minutes, what rescuers say is the best hope for finding victims now. rain on the roads means slow traffic everywhere. if you are driving, you should give yourself extra time as you can see, a live picture of

it is 7:15. investigators in mountain view accuse two 18-year-olds and a group of juveniles of throwing a wild party that burned down a house in mountain view. police have arrested these two young men, gilbert gomez and brandon pack along with 12 juveniles whose names were not released. the fire started on march 16th at a house on fordham way. the homeowners were on vacation. investigators say a group of teens broke in and hosted a series of alcohol and drug- fueled house parties. a car was also stolen but later

recovered. police expect to make more arrests in this case. we're still following developing news in washington state. officials now believe up to 24 people are dead after saturday's landslide. our reporter joining us live in arlington, washington. crews there are admitting the chances of finding anyone alive there, slim. >> reporter: good morning, dave. the crews are saying they are starting to realize the potential that there might not be any survivors. they haven't found anybody alive in the rubble since saturday. rescuers go through rain, debris and mud looking for any survivors. days after a landslide leveled a square mile of washington state. a mountain saturated by a month of punishing rain just could not hold up. >> it is just amazing the magnitude and the force that

this slide has created and what it has done. >> reporter: the search for life grows desperate, even though no one has been found alive since saturday. >> we had a very challenging day today with the rain. unfortunately, we didn't find any signs of life. >> reporter: two more bodies were recovered tuesday and another eight were found but could not be removed from the debris. local volunteers and rescue crews from neighboring states have joined the effort. among those -- >> they have to find her. my boys have said they won't stop digging for her until they do. >> reporter: the search for john came to an end on stus-- on tuesday. the body was found by his brothers. despite the grim submission, neighbors in snohomish county are not giving up home -- hoe. >> it's a close community.

everyone is doing what they can. >> reporter: and there are still 176 people missing here, dave. now, one woman said she is missing four members of other family, including both of her parents and her daughter. she said the pain is beyond the scope of her family. she said she's grieving for their entire community. dave? >> all right. thank you for the update. we want to check in with sal right now, see how things are looking on a rather soggy wednesday morning commute. >> reporter: a lot of crashes out there in the bay area. right now, traffic is going to be busy. 880 southbound is one of the busiest freeways here. i have drawn this white line. it got slow early. i do want to push back on the maps here and show you how the road sensors are very red in many of these areas. and we just got a report of a new crash northbound 280 in daly city here. northbound 280 near john daly boulevard. coming up from the mall area

and highway 1, up to daly city. maybe you are going to san francisco state, you need to give yourself extra time there. there's a crash southbound 101. it's so knew. it would be right around here. watch for slow traffic as you head down to burlingame. let's go to live pictures to show you the wet roads. the bay bridge commute is backed up to the macarthur maze. about a 40-minute drive time into san francisco. also this morning's commute in san jose is not as bad as we thought it could be. northbound 280 looks good through downtown san jose. northbound 101 and 85 are slow. just a lot of fender-benders out there. please give yourself extra time. 7:19 let's go to steve. not bad. not bad. the system, brief, heavy rain for some. other areas about .10 to over .5. but the hail reports are coming in fast and furious. it's a wet commute this morning.

this wednesday rain will be with us for the morning. still have aways to go. even if we get sun, that may help destabilize the atmosphere. snow in the sierra nevada. heaviest rain around marin county, san francisco, oakland. so far. we'll take a closer look. don't want to forget you folks up in mendocino county, lake county. cloverdale, healdsburg, it's lightened up around petaluma. you can see the band moving right through. it looks like southern marin county and san francisco and brandon sent me a tweet saying it's windy and coming down hard here through the city. i can't count how many reports of hail we've had. it looks like things have let up a little bit. vallejo, william tweety, our observer there said rain pretty good. over to martinez. you get pockets of coming down heavy and then it lets up. oakland, berkeley, emeryville. over to the east way, not too bad yet. but it looks like this line is

heading out towards antioch, oakley. baypoint, clayton, walnut creek. south, not too bad. it's picking up a little bit, especially on skyline. you can see a cell to the west of woodside. mountain view, san jose. nothing too heavy. we've had reports. look at this down towards watsonville, santa cruz, highway 1 if you are heading that way, that's big time right there. that looks like potential rain. 40s and 50s on the temperatures. there will be a bigger system on saturday which will probably double some of these amounts to the north. most of the rain will be today. thursday and friday look to be mostly dry. 31 up in tahoe. there are winter storm warnings out there until thursday morning. 38 in ukiah. that goes until thursday. but we'll have feet -- feet of snow which is what we need. we need the runoff. rain is good but we really need the snow. i think the snow level will come down, 4800 feet. cloudy with rain, occasionally

heavy. some heavy rain will move into the north later. it's been focused on san francisco. 50s and low 60s on the temperatures. not going to change too much. these are below average temperatures. we get a little bit of a break as we talked about thursday/friday. could be isolated rain to the north. but then a stronger system moves in. that could be wet for the north bay on saturday. sweeps south saturday night, clearing out on sunday. more trouble for secret service agents assigned to protect the president. the reason three agents were sent home from the netherlands. an unusual protest in berkeley. why a woman fired two weeks ago has refused to leave her office.

the servicemen killed in world war i which started 100 years ago this summer. a total 14 million people were killed in that car with 116,000 being american troops. 7:24. back here at home, listeners of berkeley community radio station kpfa may not notice a difference but the director of the group that runs kpfa was fired two weeks ago but she won't leave her office. 40-year-old summer reese and her mother, they've taken over the building. they brought in air mattresses. they are sleeping there overnight. reese believes her bosses are angry she released two-thirds of the staff at a new york radio station that the group also runs. >> i'm taking the action that's necessary to save a progressive media outlet from being destroyed from the inside. >> it's making it a bigger issue than i think it needs to be. that's what i'm concerned about. >> well, the station group says it's a personnel issue, they want reese out of that building but they don't want to have to

evict her. >> 7:25. san francisco supervisors are looking at a plan that would legalize thousands of in-law housing units. those are separate homes built without permits or inspections in garages, basements and addict -- atickets across the -- at attics. the board is scheduled to vote on the proposal next week. a virginia storeowner is $3 million rich there morning after -- richer this morning after selling herself the winning ticket. she was told someone from her store purchased a winning ticket worth $3 million. she was thrilled since her store would receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the ticket. later that day, she checked her own ticket, it turns out she was the winner. as for now, she's still working at her store. it is 7:26.

we're learning more about the man killed in a suspected drunk driving crash in fremont. how friends and family are remembering the young marine just back from a tour of duty. why are vandals poisoning lawns in a west san jose neighborhood. we'll show you the damage and show you how homeowners are fighting back. we have more crashes because of the wet weather. if you are trying to get to the silicon valley using the san mateo bridge, you will add some extra drive time here. we'll tell you about how the commutes and how they are being impacted by the rain. the main funnel looks to be southern marin county, over to oakland. there's plenty of areas getting rain down to san jose. take a look at it on radar coming up very shortly. bulldog: oh boy!

good morning. you are looking live at our camera on highway 24 in la fayette. it's a little blurry from the rain. but that rain continues to fall during this really soggy wednesday morning commute. sal's tracking all of the problems on the roads. he says there are a lot of crashes and fender-benders out there right now. he'll have more on that in just a minute. it's 7:30. i'm tori campbell. >> i'm dave clark. let's check about weather. steve's right over there. >> i just zoomed radar in on la fayette. i will show you that in a second. it's in yellow. coming down pretty good. heaviest rain, san francisco, also picking up towards san

jose and even down santa cruz to monterey looks impressive. light rain to the north. not a lot up to mendocino county, lake county, northern sonoma, napa county. it's been much lighter there. heaviest rain, san rafael. east and south. you see the line stretching down to antioch. santa rosa slammed. things have let up. it looks like it's starting to come back a little bit. south san francisco to millbrae, burlingame, sfo there. had reports the rain picked up. even out towards solano county, contra costa county, highway 4. there's la fayette. that's what's cupping oef -- coming up over there. that's also in the east bay. concord, nothing too heavy. but i expect that to pick up pretty soon and then south bay not too much. it's beginning to show itself in the darker green and the peninsula and down towards santa cruz and down to watsonville, castro valley and right off the coast of santa

cruz things look to be active. 40s and 50s on the temperatures. we have rainfall. that will be pretty good through about -- most of this is today through early thursday. i think thursday afternoon, friday we get a break. next system is saturday. cloudy with rain. sometimes these are brief, heavy downpours along with hail. a lot of reports in san francisco this morning. 50s, 60s on your temperatures. here's sal. we don't have very good traffic because of the wet weather. one of the things i want to mention is that traffic is gonna be slower almost everywhere you look. let's take a look at some of these live pictures. look at highway 24. in fact, it's raining pretty hard here. just beneath the rain is a very messy freeway, 20 minute drive time between walnut creek and the tunnel. it doesn't usually take that long. that's about double your drive time. this is not a bad commute. some commutes have tripled the drive time. some have taken very slow rides to work already this morning.

let's take a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. this commute is backed you for a 45-minute drive time into san francisco. i also want to mention that traffic on the upper deck of the bay bridge has been busy and slow. we've had some problems on the lower deck. let's take a look at the big commutes. we have westbound 580 as you come up through the livermore area. very slow traffic coming in from 205. most of it is slow in livermore and dublin. you can also see that 680 is slow -- 680 southbound is slow out of pleasanton. back to the desk. this is a wet and windy commute for you this morning. look at those pictures. this was taken in san francisco just a little while ago. the chp warning all drivers slow down. keep a distance from other drivers because the road is slick and wet. now, the police have been very busy since yesterday. they responded to about double the number of accidents on tuesday compared to monday and with more rain coming our way,

especially this weekend, also check your windshield wipers. your tire pressure and the tread in the tire. now, the sierra is under a winter weather warning. light snow fell last night on donner summit but didn't really stick. today, though, snow levels may drop to 5,000 feet with between 1 and 2 feet of new snow expected. the winter weather warning runs from now until 11:00 tomorrow. nasa is giving a new view of california's water situation. check it out. the photo taken in the central sierra nevada. scientists say this will help them determine how deep the snowpack is and how much water is in that snow. 80% of california's water comes from the runoff of melting snow in the sierra. you can, of course, track this storm on the go, using our ktvu weather app. you can download it to your iphone, ipad or android device.

san francisco police are investigating a hit-and-run crash that injured seven people. it happened around 12:40 this morning at the intersection of gary and van ness avenue. , witnesses say a sedan slammed into the side of an suv. we're told that four people were in the suv. three people in the sedan. witnesses say the people in the sedan, a woman and -- a man, rather, and would women tried to run from police but were caught. none of the injuries are life- threatening. we're learning more about the man killed by a suspected drunk driver. he was a marine just back from a tour of duty overseas. last night family members and fellow marines gathered for a candlelight candlelight vigil vig candlelight vigil for -- gathered for a candlelight vigil for andrew silva. police say silva was riding his motorcycle on fremont boulevard when a drunk driving suspect

ran a red light and slammed into silva. the intersection was closed until yesterday evening. some of his fellow marines were on the crash scene a few hours later. >> they brought a u.s. flag and a marine corps flag down to cover up the body out of respect for him. >> the young marine from union city had just returned home from afghanistan last month. he was married with a 2-year- old son. 7:36. a reward is being offered this morning in west san jose to catch a person who is committing a bizarre crime. someone is poisoning lawns killing the grass. ktvu's janine de la vega joining us live from san jose to show us the damage and tell us what's being done to catch whoever is doing this. >> reporter: we drove up and down moreland way and sou that nearly ef -- saw that nearly every lawn is being hit. it looks bad. apparently somebody has been spraying some sort of chemical that's leaving streaks of yellow and black dead grass,

killing the soil as well. if you look in the distance, you can see another lawn that got the worse of it. people who live on moreland way say as many as 30 lawns have been poisoned, causing the grass to die. some neighbors thought it might be ecoterrorism or someone upset about the drought. but some say it's unlikely because the incidents started on halloween in 2012 and 2013th but this year it's happened every month. >> it's a quiet neighborhood. we feel we're violated. to replace the lawns is thousands of dollars. what do you do? you replace it and someone comes around and does it again. the neighborhood association held a meeting where neighbors decided to collect money so they are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the capture of those responsible. some homeowners have purchased security cameras to help. the victims have contacted the councilmen who represent the area and will be meeting with them to discuss what more can

be done. they are also in the process of filing police reports. if you have any information, contact the san jose police department and leave an anonymous tip. reporting live from san jose, janine de la vega, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:37. an angry crowd confronted greg suhr last night as he tried to explain why police officers opened fire and killed a man at bernal heights park. >> mr. nieto by profession is a security guard but for mental health reasons -- >> now, on friday night someone called 911. they said there was a man with a gun in the park. when police officers responded, they found alejandro nieto. last night, chief suhr told a crowded meeting that police officers asked let to show them his hands. he said that let drew his

tasers. and police opened fire thinking it was a gun. police asked him to show his hands i. >> would expect them to know the difference between a taser and a handgun. >> now, alejandro nieto's family and friends say he carried a taser because he worked as a security guard for a nightclub. they say they are planning to protest the shooting by marching from the 24th and mission b.a.r.t. station to bernal heights park. a date for the march has not been set. two men have been arrested in a shooting that inr injured -- that injured eight people tuesday night. curtis warrenned a burl jones were -- curtis warren and buehrle jones were arrested. the shooter was targeting a man who owed him less than $50. all of the shooting victims are expected to survive. 7:39. city leaders in berkeley and richmond are trying to block a plan to allow railcars to carry crude oil through their cities.

both city councils unanimously passed measures. in berkeley, demonstrators protested before the meeting, saying they want to get other cities to support the effort to stop the crude oil rail cars. they say the rail cars are too dangerous and can explode which happened in quebec last summer and fear leaks will harm the environment. >> what you see is cleanup that really can't happen. it's just too ugly, too dirty, it's inappropriate to be shipping this material. >> the protesters also plan to lobby against it in sacramento and washington, d.c. three sisters from the east bay say they are demanding answers about why their mother has been locked up more than 8,000 miles away for almost two years. >> it was roadblock after roadblock. nobody knew anything. no one told us anything. even to this day, we still

>> yeah, a dozen planes and six ships are out over the indian ocean right now looking for debris that was spotted in new satellite images. now, it's still unclear if any pieces of the jetliner have been located but images provided by a french defense contractor shows 122 objects floating in the southern indian ocean. now, they range in size from about a foot to 23 feet. they appear to be bright which possibly indicates solid materials. >> we are throwing everything we have at the search. there are many aircraft that will be in the area today. soon there will be chinese naval and civilian ships joining the success out there. we owe it to the families. we owe it to an anxious world to do everything we can to finally locate some wreckage and to do whatever we can to

right now, it's 45. if there is a problem on the bridge that ever pops up it could be almost an hour getting in. 880 northbound and southbound is slower than it normally is. 880 has begun to slow earlier than it normally does here passing the coliseum getting up to oakland about ten minutes from this point to downtown oakland. remember, this is a stretch of about a mile or so. not that long. maybe a mile and a half. so that's a long time to wait to get that short distance. farther down, 880 southbound is on its way to the south bay. i want to show you the san jose commute. northbound 101 is backed up to the capitol expressway to mountain view. 85 is slow to 87. 280 is the best bet but it's still not great. today we'll give you more material for that little voodoo doll you made of highway 85 earlier. i know. let's go to steve. sal, is there anything going on this morning?

you can see this for yourself if you want to come to the tv and see how 24 is slowing way down and the drive time has doubled in this area between walnut creek and oakland. when up get to oakland, there's also more slow traffic waiting for you. there have not been a lot of major accidents. that's because people are going too slow to get into major crashes. westbound bay bridge is backed up from the macarthur maze. if you are waiting for someone from san francisco and they are coming from the east bay in a car, you will be waiting longer i'm afraid. this commute has been very slow. a lot of fender-benders. 85 northbound is backed up north of 87 all the way to cupertino. 280 is slow. there's a break in downtown. it's slow at 17. 101 is going to be slow. drive times are up. 580 grant line to 680, 36 minutes. 580 from high street to 24. that's about double. about a 15-minute drive. it usually takes a lot less. that's what you are dealing with. 8:03. back to the desk. we're following breaking

could see more than an inch of rain today. strong cells are moving through the area. possibility of lightning and hail according to the national weather service. we may see a brief dry spell tomorrow and friday. as you know, the rain arrived in the bay area on friday. this is the start of a long period of wet weather and the chp is preparing for problems on the roadways because when it rains, you know, we see about twice as many crashes as usual. even during breaks in the rain, drivers have to stay alert because of roads remaining wet. the chp is reminding everyone to slow down, make sure you have your headlights on. also a good idea to check the windshield wipers and make sure your tires have present plenty of -- plenty of tread. san francisco has received -- is receiving wet weather that's welcome. >> you can track this storm on the go using our ktvu weather

app. you can download it to your iphone, ipad or android device. there is a new development in the search for that missing malaysia airlines flight and it could be the most important discovery yet. officials released these satellite images from a french defense firm. they show 122 objects floating in the southern indian ocean near the area where other objects were spotted earlier. these 122 objects were scattered across a 154-square mile area. pam cook will have more on the search later this hour as well as details taken towards the first lawsuit connected with this crash. oakland detectives searching for a gunman responsible for a homicide overnight. police heard shots fired around 10:30 near 8th and campbell streets. when police arrived, they found a man who had been shot several times. dozens of markers are out there showing where shell casings were found.

at this point, we don't know the name of the shooting victim. >> they called for medical. they attempted to give the victim first aid. unfortunately, the victim succumbed to his injuries prior to the arrival of a of the am -- of the ambulance. >> investigators say bullets did hit buildings. no one else was hurt. several city council members have told the "oakland tribune" they've written a letter to jean quan urging her not to defund the shot spotter program. the spokesman for the mayor said there are no plans to cut it out of the budget when that $348,000 a year contract expires at the end of august. governor brown will be among the thousands of people attending this morning's funeral for the deputy killed in the line of duty last week. the memorial service for deputy

ricky begins at 10:00 at the cotton auditorium in fort bragg. the 48-year-old officer was a star wrestlinger and football player at napa high school in the early 1980s. a wanted fugitive killed him in an ambush style attack near fort bragg. that suspect was killed in a shootout with sheriff deputies. in a couple of hours, a major oil company is scheduled to make a big announcement about jobs in the east bay. chevron has a large refinery in richmond and executives will hold a joint news conference with the contra costa county building trades council. they are expected to announce a deal that would bring hundreds of new jobs to richmond. the details won't be announced until after this morning's news conference. 8:08. california lawmakers are now backing off from a new law requiring people who work with food to wear gloves. a state assembly committee voted to repeal and revisit the

we're following the massive relief ands rescue efforts underway in washington state. officials believe up to 24 people are dead after that landslide on saturday the at least 176 people are still listed as missing. now. crews say in some of the areas, the dirt and debris is 20 feet deep. in some places it's like quicksand. they say yesterday's rain made things worse. the crews admit the chances of finding anyone else still alive, very slim. but the rescue of a little boy is one bright spot in an otherwise grim effort. video shows 4-year-old jacob spillers. here he is, pulled from the muddy rubble on saturday. the little boy's neighbor was there when he was rescued. >> they brought him to us in the ambulance. i took his clothes off because

he was freezing. wrapped him up. >> he was in an upstairs room when the mudslide crashed into the house. his mother was at work at the time. but his brother and half siblings are still missing. the crew who saved his life said he's given them hope to carry on. a local volunteer is leaving san jose to help out in washington state. some of the volunteers for the red cross in silicon valley, they left yesterday as well. more than a dozen firefighters trained in safe-and-rescue operations in california, they are responding. they will help move the huge amount of rubble trying to find more victims. 8:17. attorneys for a bride accused of pushing her husband over a cliff in montana's glash sherr national park this past summer are moving to withdraw her guilty plea. they are accusing prosecutors of acting in bad faith. this new development comes just two days before jordan lynn

graham was to be sentenced to death for the death of her husband. graham admitted to second- degree murder when the prosecution agreed to drop the first-degree murder charge but problems started brewing when prosecutors started to push for a life sentence. a san francisco restaurant destroyed by a huge fire nearly a year and a half ago is reopening. squat and gobble went up in flames in october of 2012 after a fire started in the building next door. the fire caused $7 million in damage to three buildings. squat and gobble was rebuilt from the ground up and now includes a second floor with a private dining and meeting space and mayor ed lee will cut the ribbon at this morning's reopening. we have rain, wet roads, a lot of crashes. sal, how is the toll plaza? >> we have slow traffic trying to get into san francisco westbound bay bridge toll

plaza. 45 to one-hour delay here because you have to count on the traffic getting to the toll plaza. when you do get into san francisco, you will see some trouble on city streets, california and kerney because of some sort of a problem. the cable car lines are down and traffic is going to be affected in this area. we also have a look at traffic on interstate 880. it's slower than usual early. if you are going to "we day" give yourself extra time to get there on time. it will take you longer to get there and get into downtown oakland. we've had numerous collisions. 280 is one of the better freeways. it's not good for long. 280 is slow up right around the corner. public transportation a good option for you. you may want to think about taking that. things are moving relatively smoothly there. let's go to steve. cloudy for some. rain heavy for others. reports of hail have tailed off

francisco. that would be a mud and dirt supply on the onramp to southbound 280. caltrans has been called. the freeway is a mess. the freeway on 101 is a mess. several fender-benders in san francisco. san jose in the south bay, 101 is moderately heavy. it's been busy as your way to mountain view. just remember, i can't say everything that's going on. almost every freeway in the bay area is slower than norm a there are a lot of fender- benders. another update coming up. we're following breaking news right now. fbi raids targeting several people including state senator leland yee. alex savidge joining us live. you are in san francisco telling us what we know now. alex? >> reporter: well, dave, good morning. we do have reports that this widespread criminal investigation by the fbi does involve state senator leland yee. we've been told that chp officers and other law enforcement officers are surrounding senator lee's office in sacramento right now. there have been a series of

raids all across northern california, including here in san francisco, where we are this morning. this is gee kung tongue. it's the chinese free mason building in chinatown. police are guarding the entrance. they served a search warrant at this location. we expect in a short time they will be bringing some sort of evidence out of this building here. it's sort of in an alleyway in china town. they are standing guard here. we're waiting for evidence to be brought out. this was part of a series of search warrants executed across the bay area today. let me show you video here from another location on hyde street. we just came from this location on hyde street. it's an apartment building. a multilevel apartment building. very early this morning, fbi agents, we understand, they raided that location searching for a particular person. it's unclear exactly if they found the person they were looking for at that location. we did hear from neighbors who live in the building. there was quite a commotion.

one woman described what happened when she heard a commotion and opened up her door. listen to her. >> it was like 5:30 in the morning, and i heard a loud thump that woke me up. so i went into the hallway and i peeked my head out the door and there was a guy leaned up against the apartment door with a -- i was like what's going on? he said go back inside. >> reporter: the fbi executed search warrants in san francisco and sacramento. this is another location where local police, san francisco police are here right now. they are guarding this location and we are waiting for evidence to be brought out here. we understand there have been multiple people evidence. the fbi not confirming an exact figure. the reports are that senator leland yee's office is surrounded by chp officers and that the senator in some form

compared to monday. with more rain coming our way in the forecast, especially this weekend, they are also saying you better check your windshield wipers your tire pressure around the tread on your tire. the sierra is under a winter weather warning. light snow fell up there last night on donner summit. didn't stick, though. today, however, snow levels may drop to 5,000 feet with between 1 and 2 feet of new snow expected. the winter weather warning will continue until 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. and nasa is giving us a new view of california's water situation. this is a photo. this was taken from 20,000 feet above the tuolumne river basin in the central sierra nevada. scientists say it will help them figure out how deep the snowpack is and there are measurements taken from the sky are within 4 inches of what is actually measured on the ground. 80% of california's water comes from the runoff of the melting snow in the sierra.

moreland way, which is off the road here, have posted fliers that you see here offering a reward that leads to catching whoever is responsible for destroying the lawns here. take a look at the yellow streaks of tead grass -- of dead grass. it can be scene on the lawns here. people say as many as 30 lawns have been vandalized. something is being sprayed or poured on the grass causing it to die. it started halloween 2012, 2013. they thought it was a prank but it's happening every month. homeowners have a message for the vandal. >> stop, please. it's -- why? i have no idea why anyone would be doing this. >> what happens next? when the thrill of this goes away, what will they target next? >> reporter: neighbors are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the

sacramento. we've confirmed that state senator lee land lee is involved. alex savidge is live in san francisco where one of the raids occurred early this morning. >> reporter: good morning. ktvu can now confirm that we've seen state senator leland yee in custody in a car headed to the federal courthouse. again, we understand that he's involved in some way in this criminal investigation being conducted by the fbi. multiple people have been arrested this morning and a number of raids served around the bay area and around northern california for that matter. we are here this morning at the ghee kung tongue chinese free mason building in chinatown. this on spafford. you can see san francisco police rear right now. we understand they will be bringing evidence from the location here at some point soon. we don't know exactly the nature of this investigation. the fbi is not confirming the nature of this investigation. but again search warrants were served around the city.

pam? >> reporter: that's right. satellite images from a french defense contractor show more than 100 pieces of possible wreckage from the missing malaysia airline. there are dozens of planes and ships in the ocean. but search teams so far have not been able to locate the pieces so they don't know if anything spotted is from flight 370. >> it's not very far from the objects by the chinese government which is over here and the australian government which is over there. so this is still the most credible lead that we have. it is confirmed to be m- -- if it's confirmed to be mh-370, we can move on to the next phase, search and rescue. >> two american devices designed to pinpoint the pings from the flight data recorder arrived in australia today. a special unmanned submarine
